5 feb 2025: Mis jouw mails, Henry. Lees ze meestal en dan met plezier. Zit je lekker ergens in de zon? Tijdje terug was ik voor t eerst in Griekenland, Kreta. Erg plezierig. 6 feb 2025: Hoi Heribert, Wat aardig om zo’n mailtje te schrijven 🙂 Mijn antwoord is een persoonlijke nieuwsbrief: / Hi Heribert, How nice to write such an email 🙂 My answer is your personal newsletter: Het lijkt op het moment wel of ik weer terug ben geworpen naar begin 2023. Dat heeft zowel iets positiefs als dat het tegenzit. Toen ging ik maaltijden organiseren om gesprekken te hebben over hoe het nu verder moest na de pandemie met de ervaring dat het moeilijk is om weer leven te blazen in locatie specifiek werken. En jij was een van de gasten. Dus brachten deze maaltijden me naar Bad Nieuweschans maar ook naar Griekenland, deze twaalf maaltijden brachten twee jaar werk op allerlei plekken en met heel veel mooie mensen. Maar ook met de wrange kanten van economische factoren, krimp en hard werk voor een extreem lage dagprijs. / At the moment it seems as if I have been thrown back to the beginning of 2023. That is both positive and something really negative. Then I started organizing meals to have conversations about how to proceed after the pandemic knowing it was going to be difficult to breathe life back into site-specific work. And you were one of my guests. These meals brought me to Bad Nieuweschans but also to Greece, these twelve meals triggered two years of work in all kinds of places and with many beautiful people. But also showed the bitter sides of economic downfall and hard work for a very low daily rate. In de laatste maanden was ik in Griekenland en België en ben weer terug in Nederland, en werk aan de opvolger van Lees me, dit keer niet over Elles maar wel vanuit dezelfde gedachte dus over vrouwen, zorg en eten. Maar ondanks de maanden die ik investeer in aanvragen en onderzoek is de financiering een ramp. Net als begin 2023 weet ik echt niet meer waar ik het zoeken moet wat dat betreft. En werk ik intussen een aantal dagen in de week in een keuken van een lokaal restaurant. / In the past months I was in Greece and Belgium and am back in the Netherlands, working on the successor of Lees me, this time not about Elles but from working from the same idea; women, care and food. But despite the months I invested in applications and research, the funding is a disaster. Just like early 2023, I really don’t know where to go from here in that regard. In the meantime I work a few days a week in a kitchen of a local restaurant. De culturele wereld is een wereld van marketing, vinkjes zetten en heeft totaal geen contact meer met wat er echt aan de hand is. Theater maak ik in Nederland al helemaal niet meer, die wereld is volkomen ontoegankelijk geworden voor me. Daar doen ze dingen voor hun zelf en met hun zelf, en ik kom op veel plekken maar hun kom ik er niet tegen. / The “cultural world” is a world of marketing, ticking boxes and has no contact with what is really going on. I don’t do theatre in the Netherlands at all anymore, that world has become completely inaccessible to me. There they do things for themselves and with themselves, and I go to many places but I don’t meet them anywhere.

Dus valt het even tegen en is de opvolger van Lees me niet zomaar gemaakt (met de bijgesloten afbeelding geef ik een kijkje achter schermen). Dus ben ik weer bezig met het organiseren van maaltijden in mijn eigen huis, en dit keer ook op andere plekken. Ik heb veel kookspullen, o.a. van Elles want die kan er echt niets meer mee. Koken is een goede taal. En laten we hopen dat deze maaltijden ook weer twee jaar werk veroorzaken. / So it is a bit disappointing and the successor to Lees me isn’t made any soon (with the enclosed image I give a look behind the scenes). Again I am busy organizing meals in my own house again, and this time also in other places. I have a lot of cooking utensils, including Elles’s because she really can’t do anything with them anymore. Cooking is still a good language. And let’s hope that these meals will also cause two years of work. Ik sta altijd open voor suggesties! / I’m always open to suggestions! Henry

18 February 2025: The picture above shows one of my dinner guests as a child. She brought a Lithuanian dish that her mother used to make and I think my guest is longing for more of this cake and might return home soon 🙂 At the dinners we discuss food & care and for this I am inspired by a text written by Adrienne Rich called ‘notes towards a politics of location’. You can also get invited if you want to!
