The Table Is Set 2025

“Een voorstelling zonder acteurs, en dan noemt de maker het nog liever ‘picknicken voor gevorderden’ ”. The Table Is Set is een reizende eet-voorstelling waarbij het publiek ‘graaft’ in haar eigen herinnering om samen bloot te leggen wat er nog gaat gebeuren; met eten om de toekomst te kunnen voorspellen en voor altijd het verleden te onthouden. En steevast speelt men samen een scene uit een film. Maar evenzogoed verandert de voorstelling in een workshop over hoe voor het laatst een vliegtuig je mond in vloog. En dit alles gebeurt gewoon aan de eettafel van The Table Is Set / “A performance without actors, and the maker prefers to call it a ‘picnic for the advanced’”. The Table Is Set is a travelling food performance in which the audience ‘digs’ into its own memory to uncover together what is yet to happen; with food to predict the future and to remember the past forever. And invariably, together they act out a scene from a film. But just as easily, the performance turns into a workshop about how an airplane last flew into your mouth. All of this happens around the dinner table of The Table Is Set.

The Table Is Set is een recept voor een lange avond samenzijn om nooit te vergeten georganiseerd door Henry Alles, een geëngageerde maker die onderzoek doet naar een geschiedenis én toekomst van onderaf, via persoonlijke ontmoetingen waarin relaties tot eten en landschap centraal staan. Hij bezit een master in Theater Praktijken en een bachelor Milieukunde en realiseerde eerder al eens een programma met verplaatsbare kunstenaarsresidenties. Daarnaast draagt hij bij aan andere collectieven want ‘als het over hem gaat, gaat het dus juist ook over anderen.’ / The Table Is Set is a recipe for a long evening of sharing to never forget, organised by Henry Alles; a committed maker who researches a history and future from the bottom up, through personal encounters in which relationships to food and landscape are central. He holds a master’s degree in Theatre and a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Sciences and previously realised a programme with mobile artist residencies. Next to all of this he contributes to other collectives because ‘if it’s about him, it’s also about others.’

‘Wij kunstenaars maken geen kunstwerken, wij vinden nieuwe praktijken uit’ zegt collega Sylvio Lang in 2022 in het gelijknamige drukwerk. Het is daarom dus niet de vraag voor Henry hoe een voorstelling te maken, het is de vraag hoe een voorstelling er anno nu er uit zou moeten zien met de urgentie in het maken van verbinding, met gastvrijheid en zingeving. Want theater als louter entertainment is in zijn ogen niet interessant meer; wat en wie er op de voorgrond treden is nu belangrijk. En dat wat er toe doet zijn meestal de gasten aan tafel. Praktisch betekent het dat Henry, langzaam en nomadisch als hij is, ergens arriveert met een bus vol ideeen, kookspullen, maskers en kostuums en dan lokaal eten en mensen verzameld om tot een diner te komen. Een voorstelling zonder acteurs die gebruikt maakt van de ervaring van de gasten en hun kracht om zonder opsmuk een verhaal te vertellen dat boeit in een setting die voor iedereen aanvoelt als magisch. / ‘We artists don’t create artworks, we invent practices’ Sylvio Lang states in his publication in 2022. Therefore the question to Henry is not how to make a performance, the question is what a performance should look like in this day and age with the urgency of making a connection, with hospitality and meaning. In his opinion theatre as mere entertainment is no longer interesting; what and who now needs to be drawn into the foreground is more important. And what matters are usually the guests at the table. In practice, this means that Henry, slow and nomadic as he is, arrives somewhere with a bus full of ideas, cooking utensils, masks and costumes and then gathers local food and people to have dinner. A performance without actors that uses the experience of the guests and their strength to tell a story without frills that captivates in a setting that feels magical to everyone.

De eerste The Table Is Set vond in 2023 plaats in Athene en Henry hoopt de serie diners, die een onderzoek naar samenzijn werd, af te sluiten met een boek of zoals hij het noemt een kookatlas getiteld In de keuken, Ermis! In deze persoonlijke kroniek volgen we de nomadische kunstenaar Henry (alias Ermis), die zich beweegt tussen Nederland en Noord-Griekenland. In een Griekse keuken, tussen de pompoenen en filodeeg, herinnert hij zich eerdere samenwerkingen, verlies en zorg en wordt de keuken een plek van reflectie en actie. Het unieke boekwerk komt in een eerste oplage van honderd stuks. / The first The Table Is Set took place in Athens in 2023 and Henry hopes to conclude the series of diners, which turned into an investigation into togetherness, with a book or as he calls it a cooking atlas entitled In the Kitchen, Ermis! In this personal chronicle we follow the nomadic artist Henry (alias Ermis), who moves between the Netherlands and Northern Greece. In a Greek kitchen, among the pumpkins and filo pastry, he remembers previous collaborations, loss and care and the kitchen becomes a place of reflection and action. The unique book will be published in an initial edition of one hundred copies.

Het programma in 2025: Dit jaar reist Henry langzaamaan weer richting Griekenland. Maar onderweg word er gegeten in het ritme van het leven, worden de wisselingen eb en vloed gevierd evenals de wisseling van de seizoenen. Dus in Belgie doen we Timelab in Gent aan met The Table Is Set ‘for mapping your story through food’ op 12 september, In Brussel, bij Brussels Experimental Forum, doen we The Table Is Set ‘for Stalkers’ op 20/21 september en bij Cabara Atlantique, in Frankrijk, is de nomadische kunstenaar Henry Alles uitgenodigd voor zowel La Table est Mise als de workshop Archéologie du Futur. / The program in 2025: This year Henry is slowly travelling back to Greece. But on the way there will be food in the rythms of life, the changing ebb and flow will be celebrated as well as the changing of the seasons. In September we will visit Timelab in Ghent with The Table Is Set ‘for mapping your story through food’ , and Brussels, at Brussels Experimental Forum, we will do The Table Is Set ‘for Stalkers’. At the end of that month at Cabara Atlantique (F) the nomadic artist Henry Alles has been invited for both La Table est Mise and the workshop Archéologie du Futur.

Henry: “Onderweg door Europa, in de keuken in Spileo en overal aan tafel zoek ik naar de verhalen van eters, moeders, peetmoeders, vrouwen in werkplaatsen en ik richt me op de situaties in hun leven die daadwerkelijk hebben plaatsgevonden”. ‘Herstories’ (geen his-story’s) en aangepaste visies op de toekomst zoals deze eerder werden geformuleerd door Donna Haraway, Ursula Le Guin en Adrienne Rich. Het voelt als een archeologie van de toekomst; blootleggen wat er nog staat te gebeuren als we de geschiedenis herschrijven./ Henry: “On the road through Europe, in the kitchen in Spileo and everywhere at the table I look for the stories of eaters, mothers, godmothers, women in workshops and I focus on the situations in their lives that actually happened”. ‘Herstories’ (not his-stories) and adapted visions of the future as they were formulated earlier by Donna Haraway, Ursula Le Guin and Adrienne Rich. It feels like an archaeology of the future; exposing what is yet to happen when we re-write history.
