The Table Is Set 2025

Henry Alles organiseert de reizende eet-voorstelling The Table Is Set: een voorstelling zonder acteurs, dus noem het gerust ‘picknicken voor gevorderden’. Met de geserveerde gerechten* graven we in onze herinnering om bloot te leggen wat er nog gaat gebeuren; eten om de toekomst te kunnen voorspellen en voor altijd het verleden te onthouden. En steevast eten we poffert en spelen we een scene uit Tarkovsky’s The Scacrifice. / Henry Alles organizes the traveling food show The Table Is Set; a performance without actors, call it a ‘picnic for the advanced’. With the dishes* served we dig into our memories to reveal what is yet to happen; eat to predict the future and remember the past forever. Most often we do eat festive cake and act out a scene from Tarkovsky’s The Scarifice.
Praktisch betekent het dat Henry arriveert met een bus vol ideeen, kookspullen, maskers en kostuums en dan lokaal eten en mensen verzameld om tot een diner te komen. / In practise it entails for Henry to arrive with his van on site; full of ideas, some cooking equipment and costumes while local food and people stay leading up to the event.
De eerstvolgende The Table Is Set vind plaats op 21 maart 2025 op kantoor van literatuurorganisatie Wintertuin, in Nijmegen (NL). / The next The Table Is Set will take place on March 21, 2025 at the office of the literature organization Wintertuin, in Nijmegen (NL).
Omdat Henry momenteel werkt aan In de keuken, Ermis!, de opvolger van het boekwerk Lees me, moet er wel gegeten worden om nog meer aan de weet te komen over kokende vrouwen, moeders en zorgverleners. Henry zelf doet onderzoek naar een vrouwencollectief in Noord-Griekenland dat via een keuken en winkel lokale, grensoverschrijdende gerechten deelt in een gebied dat nu ook een vluchtroute is voor migranten uit andere delen van de wereld. Dus onderweg in Europa organiseert hij deze ‘The Table Is Set’ diners. / As Henry currently is working on In the kitchen, Ermis!, the successor to the book Lees me, we must at least eat to learn even more about women who cook, mothers and caregivers. Henry himself is researching a women’s collective in Northern Greece that shares local, cross-border dishes via a kitchen and shop in an area that is now also an escape route for migrants from other parts of the world. And on the road in Europe he organizes the ‘The Table Is Set’ dinners.

Als Henry iets doet, doen juist ook anderen iets. Dus de gasten nemen eten mee. De uitnodiging is tevens een verzoek om een gerecht dat samenhangt met een specifieke gebeurtenis in het leven van een moeder of stiefmoeder. Samen vormen de gerechten een reis door tijd en ruimte vormen, met het tafelkleed als keukenatlas. / When Henry does something, others do something too. In other words the guests bring food. The invitation is a request for a dish that is related to a specific event in the life of a mother or stepmother. Together, the dishes form a journey through time and space, with the tablecloth as a kitchen atlas.
Er staan in ieder geval nog The Table Is Set‘s gepland in Groningen, Ermelo en Frankrijk.
