Tiny Artist in Residence

The TAIR is a mobile artist in residence.

The TAIR is a magnificent left over from the theatre production ‘Once upon a time in het veen’. A project that not only was a beautiful show but above all a great undertaking in which a small locomotive with carriages was transported with the help of only 100 meters of rail and a lot of people. It was a true tinker western.

Accomodation Information:
A wooden trainwagon, 300 by 170 cm, on a former horsetrailer. Small but suitable for all kind of work. One bed, gasstove, books, cooking facilities and a beautiful landscape. It must be stressed that the TAIR is not only a workshop but also place of residence.

Description:
The TAIR is inspired by the landscape, the location and the local inhabitants. The quality of food, ecology, practical knowledge of the landscape, community spirit and the supply of energy are recurring themes within the projects.
It is not the express intention of the TAIR to leave behind some kind of physical art object, but rather to organize short-term art projects that might promote social cohesion for the duration of the project and possibly after.

The T.A.I.R. is a magnificent left over from the theatre production ‘Once upon a time in het veen’. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe storyline of the play and the transport by train was based on the story in “ Once Upon a Time in the West” but now situated in the peat colony in the northeastern part of the Netherlands. The story and the exploitation of this peat colony are comparable and are all about colonizing, using and abusing.
The project basically was about a small industrial train being transport over a 100 metres of railway. In which the volunteers had to pick up rail behind the train and put it back in front of the train and this way travelling over a distance op 100 kilometres. By doing this we re-enacted the colonizing of the area in a very attractive way. Finding volunteers was the main task and also the main way to get into contact with people living in the area.
We halted in 10 different locations where we started a railway station. And during the weekends we performed the play, sold out to the very last seat in every show. ‘Once upon a time in het veen’ was a remarkable production with a lot of local, regional and national attention and a great catalyst for stories.

Making a railway was a big effort. And after two and a half months only the website remained and a wooden carriage. Now we don’t lay rail. We drive on tarmac. The wheels of the wooden carriage got replaced with a horse trailer and can now be connected to any automobile. On it’s way to new adventures. We gave it a new name: the T.A.I.R, tiny artist in residence, a beautiful tiny home for artists and others.
