PAIR a short story 2009-2018

Out to burry something

The P.A.I.R. started in 2009 with a broad view on landscape and thru sub theme’s about knowledge, location and population it’s working method now comes down to three words: school, library and workshop.

The P.A.I.R. project stimulates art with a social commitment in which people and their surrounding landscape are at the core. And offers the change to work very local at different locations. The P.A.I.R. project expects the artist to involve themselves locally, do research and involve other specialists, scientists and others.

The final results of a project with the P.A.I.R. might have any form. One is not obliged to make an art object. Even only the presentation of the research might be worthwhile. The whole purpose of a stay in the P.A.I.R. is to contribute to the development of the artist, the growth of knowledge based in the P.A.I.R. and the meaning it has for the local community.

The P.A.I.R. offers the possibility to work from within a community and to understand the surrounding landscape. To make this possible the portable residence was created, simple and effective, with solar powere, flush water free toilet, kitchen, watersystem and some tools.

Abby Buwalda, THE FINE CHAP,THE MONK AND THE CARTOGRAPHER, Three artistic representations of a small rural region, 2014.

The P.A.I.R. facilitates the artist to dig themselves into the local community, which could potentially result in more than only using the locality as subject of your work. If the locals are so close to your creative process, why not involve them in it? The P.A.I.R. is the perfect laboratory to research the possibilities of not only making art ‘about’ and ‘for’ the local community, but also to make it ‘with’ them.
