With the School for the Happy Apocalypse we can look very creatively at the possibilities that coming or already developing disasters offer us. This is not about the stories where people get by with a god given ark or some other miracle, this is about the stories of everyone else. A school to learn how to get past panic and trauma, and how we dare to look the beautiful in the eye.

The school is a model of thinking that juxtaposes the three concepts of school, cheerfulness and disaster, in a triangle. Inside this triangle is placed a situation that you can get started with. So what does it mean, for example, if you want to learn something about the catastrophe of the pandemic when it also has to be done with a positive attitude. So how do you stay cheerful? How do you learn from a disaster?

Last year we (the editors: Anna Dupon, Erin Stel, Marike Splinter and Henry Alles) looked at how to react to the disaster that our dear colleague artist and cook Elles Kiers turned out to have Alzheimer's disease and thus never again will create her edible art. With a smile on our face we published the book Read Me, cooked recipes from it with others and set up a foundation named after a work by Elles: Stichting Proef me.

LEES ME, 2021

Already during the making of LEES ME we thought about 'how to get a group together?' if a society seems to do everything it can to prevent this. We are not saying from mere anger as the school also stands for the fact that beauty and cruelty coexist, so also in illness, accidents, disasters and systemic errors. The goal is to educate yourself and each other about the situations that are really going on.
